NM House Candidates Clash Over Medicaid Work Requirements in Debate
Incumbent Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) and Republican challenger Ndidiamaka Okpareke debated New Mexico's First Congressional District race, sparring over new Medicaid eligibility requirements set to take effect Jan. 1. Stansbury blamed Trump and congressional Republicans for the changes and pledged to fight to undo them, while Okpareke argued Medicaid should be reserved for the "most vulnerable" and not "able-bodied citizens who have the ability to work," also proposing reselling unused prescription drugs to lower healthcare costs. The candidates also split on affordability, the Iran war's economic effects, and DEA fentanyl allegations, finding agreement only on ending the Iran war. The general election is Nov. 3.
