Tenet CEO Welcomes Nonprofit Rivals' Multibillion-Dollar ASC Buys

On Tenet Healthcare's Oct. 29 earnings call, Chairman and CEO Saumya Sutaria said he congratulated Bon Secours Mercy Health and Ascension on their recent multibillion-dollar ambulatory surgery center acquisitions, framing the nonprofit systems as allies rather than competitors. Bon Secours agreed Oct. 26 to acquire Surgery Partners for about $5.7 billion, while Ascension closed its $3.9 billion Amsurg acquisition in June, making the two systems among the largest ASC operators alongside Tenet's United Surgical Partners International, which holds interests in 538 ASCs and 26 surgical hospitals. Sutaria called for joint advocacy to support ambulatory surgery growth and ensure regulators understand its cost benefits. He also highlighted USPI's continued acquisition and de novo expansion strategy, including over $100 million invested in Q3 acquisitions.

Why it mattersConsolidation of ASC ownership among large for-profit and nonprofit systems will shape site-of-care shifts, network contracting leverage, and reimbursement dynamics that Medicaid managed care plans must navigate when steering surgical volume to lower-cost settings.
