Moody's Upgrades Credit Ratings for Four Health Systems
Moody's upgraded credit ratings for four hospital systems on Oct. 19 and 20: ProHealth Care (Wisconsin), Genesis HealthCare System (Ohio), and UF Health Shands and UF Health Jacksonville (Florida). Drivers cited include sustained strong financial performance, debt paydown, high liquidity, and for the Florida systems, new directed payment programs and leadership changes. ProHealth Care rose to Aa3 from A1 with 562 days cash on hand, while UF Health Jacksonville and UF Health Shands upgrades were tied partly to new directed payment programs supporting stronger-than-expected financial results. Genesis HealthCare System moved to Baa3 from Ba1, reflecting its role as a sole community provider in a rural market.
Why it mattersStronger credit ratings lower borrowing costs and signal improved financial stability for these systems, with Medicaid directed payment programs cited as a material driver of two hospitals' improved performance.
