NC Democrats Flip House Majority, End Senate Veto-Proof Supermajority
North Carolina Democrats appear to have won control of the state House and broken the Republican supermajority in the Senate in Tuesday's election, according to unofficial returns. Democrats unseated several senior GOP legislators, including Rep. Donny Lambeth, a key budget writer and early Republican supporter of Medicaid expansion, and several committee chairs. House Democratic leader Rep. Robert Reives was introduced as the likely next Speaker. Results remain unofficial pending county certification, and at least one race is within recount range.
Why it mattersA Democratic House majority and a broken Senate supermajority shift control over the state budget, Medicaid financing decisions, and any future changes to the state's Medicaid expansion program, giving Democrats new leverage to block or reshape GOP-driven health policy.
