Wyden Poised to Chair Senate Finance After Democrats Retake Congress
Following Democratic wins in Tuesday's midterm elections, several Pacific Northwest lawmakers are positioned to assume powerful congressional committee roles, OPB reports. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) is poised to chair the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees Medicare, Medicaid, taxation and trade, and said he plans to scrutinize insurance companies and pharmaceutical executives. Other Oregon and Washington Democrats, including Sen. Jeff Merkley, Sen. Patty Murray, Sen. Maria Cantwell, Rep. Adam Smith, Rep. Rick Larsen and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, are in line for chair or ranking positions on committees covering budget, appropriations, armed services, transportation and education. The article notes Democrats face limits on legislative accomplishments given presidential veto power, but could use committee authority for oversight and investigations.
