California to Cut Medi-Cal Asset Limit to $21,000 in 2027

CalMatters reports that California's June budget will lower the Medi-Cal asset limit for seniors and people with disabilities to $21,000 starting July 2027, down from the current $130,000 cap set earlier this year. The state eliminated asset limits entirely in 2024 after years of advocacy, but reversed course amid a $12 billion budget shortfall, first reinstating a $130,000 limit and now cutting it further. A primary residence and one vehicle remain exempt, but enrollees cannot own a second home or vehicle or hold more than $21,000 in savings, retirement accounts, life insurance, or burial plots, while still meeting income limits around $1,800 a month for a single person. Advocates say the repeated rollbacks are part of broader federal and state cuts expected to strip coverage from more than 2.2 million Californians over four years.

Why it mattersState Medicaid agencies and advocates must prepare for significant disenrollment among elderly and disabled beneficiaries as California reinstates stricter asset testing ahead of the July 2027 effective date.
