Crozer Hospital Owners Tap Penn Medicine to Plan Reopening

Chariot Equities and Allaire Health Services, which bought the shuttered 300-bed Crozer-Chester Medical Center campus in January, are working with Penn Medicine to evaluate which services could return, though Penn Medicine has made no commitment to operate the hospital. The Upland, Pa. facility closed in May 2025 after Prospect Medical Holdings' bankruptcy, laying off more than 2,600 workers. Owners are modeling service lines including cardiology, oncology, neurology, behavioral health, and trauma care, but plan to exclude inpatient obstetrical beds due to staffing and regulatory hurdles. Owners expect more clarity on an operator and the state's role by early 2027, while a Neumann University-run primary care clinic could open as soon as March if grant-funded.

Why it mattersThe reopening timeline and service mix will determine whether Medicaid beneficiaries in Delaware County regain access to inpatient and specialty care, including maternity services that will instead be referred elsewhere.
