Rep. Tony Wied Wins Reelection in Wisconsin's 8th District
Republican U.S. Rep. Tony Wied defeated Democratic challenger Rick Crosson in Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District, winning 55.3% to 44.7% as called by AP. Wied, who supported the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's federal health spending cuts, defended the law during the campaign, arguing the Affordable Care Act drove up medical costs while Republicans secured funding for rural hospitals. That rural hospital funding is substantially smaller than the shortfall those hospitals face from broader Medicare and Medicaid cuts in the law. The race drew less national attention than Wisconsin's more competitive 1st and 3rd districts.
Why it mattersWied's reelection returns to Congress a reliable vote for federal Medicaid spending reductions that rural Wisconsin hospitals say will outpace the offsetting funding they've received.
