Sharon Regional Pauses Inpatient Care Amid Payroll Crisis
Sharon Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania has paused inpatient services after missing two consecutive payroll cycles, though its emergency department remains open and will stabilize and transfer patients needing inpatient care. The hospital, owned by turnaround firm Tenor Health Foundation, reopened in May 2025 after closing under previous owner Steward Health Care, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024. No final decision has been made on the hospital's future as the system says it is pursuing funding options to meet payroll obligations. Tenor has expanded significantly in Pennsylvania this year, including a $33 million purchase of three Community Health Systems hospitals in February.
Why it mattersLoss of inpatient capacity disrupts access for Medicaid beneficiaries and other patients in the region and signals financial instability that could affect provider network adequacy for Medicaid managed care plans operating in western Pennsylvania.
