Mass General Brigham Launches Second Layoff Round in Two Years
Mass General Brigham began a new round of layoffs last week, its second in under two years, as the Massachusetts health system tries to close a budget gap exceeding $300 million in fiscal 2026, according to a Boston Globe report. The system did not disclose the number of roles affected but said cuts will extend beyond administrative functions into clinical and operational redesign; Mass Eye and Ear will close its general pediatric inpatient unit by Jan. 1, shifting patients to other system hospitals. Leaders have set a goal of a 1.5% operating margin, roughly $300 million, by fiscal 2028, up from a 0.3% margin in fiscal 2025, and attribute the squeeze to labor, supply and operating costs outpacing reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurers. The cuts follow roughly 1,500 position eliminations in early 2025.
