LendingTree: Hospital Stay Costs Equal 11 Weeks of Wages
LendingTree's Oct. 5 report finds a typical U.S. hospital stay of nearly five days carries an estimated $16,353 in hospital expenses, requiring 435 hours of work at average wages to cover, up 13.3% from a prior analysis using 2021 data. The figures reflect hospitals' costs for inpatient care, not patient billing or out-of-pocket amounts. State variation is wide: California has the highest estimated per-stay expense at $23,530, while Mississippi has the lowest at $6,949. Idaho residents face the heaviest work burden at 648 hours, rising to roughly 3,067 hours, nearly a year and a half of full-time work, for minimum-wage earners.
Why it mattersRising hospital expenses and wide state-by-state cost variation underscore affordability pressure that drives uncompensated care, coverage churn, and demand for Medicaid eligibility and enrollment stability among low-income populations.
