Academic Health Systems Acquire Community Hospitals in West Virginia, Kansas

WVU Health System completed its acquisition of Independence Health System on Oct. 1, adding five Pennsylvania community hospitals and affiliated physician practices, bringing WVU's portfolio to 30 hospitals and committing $800 million over five years for modernization and service expansion. Separately, The University of Kansas Health System signed a definitive agreement Sept. 29 to take over operations of St. Francis Campus in Topeka from Ardent Health, ending a joint venture arrangement in place since 2017; Ardent will remain involved during a transition period. The Kansas deal requires regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of 2026. Both moves reflect continued consolidation of community hospitals into larger academic health systems.
