Vermont Doctors Say Hospital Budget Cuts Are Reducing Patient Care

In a VTDigger letter to the editor, Vermont Medical Society board members and other clinicians argue that state-mandated hospital budget cuts aimed at controlling healthcare costs are instead reducing patient access and overwhelming providers. The authors cite examples gathered from clinicians at more than half of Vermont's hospitals, including earlier patient discharges, cuts to social work staff, reduced capacity for specialist transfers, and physicians retiring early due to unsustainable workloads. They ask the Legislature and the Green Mountain Care Board, Vermont's hospital regulator, to monitor the impact of cost-cutting on retention and access, shift budget metrics away from net patient revenue, and adopt a multiyear budget process. The letter does not announce new regulatory action but urges the board to change its approach to hospital budget oversight.

Why it mattersHospitals and Medicaid-serving providers in Vermont face continued regulatory pressure to cut costs without added revenue, a dynamic that clinicians warn is eroding staffing, safety-net services and access for vulnerable and rural patients.
