Michigan Opens New $383M State Psychiatric Hospital in Northville

Michigan officials celebrated the completion of the Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Hospital in Northville, a 406,000-square-foot, 264-bed state-run facility built on the former Hawthorn Center site. The hospital adds 54 beds to the state's inpatient psychiatric capacity, bringing the statewide total to 730, and will be the only facility in Michigan providing inpatient psychiatric care to children. Patients currently housed at Walter P. Reuther Hospital in Westland will begin transferring to the new facility later this month, with the state's fiscal year 2027 budget allocating $33.8 million to begin operations. The opening comes as Michigan ranks 47th nationally for access to inpatient psychiatric beds and amid a 2025 state audit finding inadequate protection of patient rights at state mental health facilities.
