Nebraska Regents Expand UNMC Teaching Hospital Project to $2.75B
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved an expanded scope for Project Health, the planned primary teaching hospital for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, raising the projected cost to $2.75 billion. The board approved the revised program statement at an Oct. 9 meeting, according to an Oct. 12 UNMC news release. The facility will grow to 1.5 million square feet, up from 1.25 million, with the roughly $500 million cost increase driven by the larger footprint and rising construction costs. The expanded plan adds beds, specialized care areas, and inpatient, surgical, interventional, laboratory, education and research capacity, and will allow retirement of aging facilities.
Why it mattersThe expanded capital investment signals significant future capacity growth for a major academic medical center that serves as a key referral and training hub for Nebraska's Medicaid managed care population.
