Patients Escalate Insurance Denials Directly to Insurer CEOs
MedPage Today reported Oct. 8 that patients facing insurance coverage denials are increasingly emailing insurer CEOs directly, sometimes winning approvals that standard appeals processes denied. Two cases cited include a chemotherapy approval after a patient emailed a CEO, and an out-of-network surgery covered at in-network rates after an AI-assisted appeal letter was sent to executives, lawmakers and journalists. A former Cigna executive said insurers maintain teams for handling high-profile escalations, while an academic health finance expert suggested physicians contact medical directors directly. The report ties the trend to broader denial concerns: a June Commonwealth Fund survey found 21% of privately insured adults reported a denial in the past year, with only about half appealing; Cleveland Clinic separately reported a 15% incoming denial rate in 2025 but overturned 92% of those denials.
