CMS, VA Launch Data Match to Catch Duplicate Medical Payments

CMS and the VA's Veterans Health Administration have established a computer matching program under the Privacy Act to identify individuals enrolled in both Medicare and VHA health care. VHA will periodically send CMS a finder file listing enrolled veterans, which CMS will use to cross-check against Medicare claims and spot instances where both agencies paid for the same services. The agencies intend to use matching results to recover duplicate payments, improve payment accuracy, and flag potential fraud, waste, and abuse. The notice takes effect under standard Privacy Act procedures announced October 21, 2026.

Why it mattersThe data match gives CMS a new tool to claw back duplicate payments and flag fraud, which could affect providers and plans billing for services to dually-enrolled veterans.
