Becker's Tracks 18 Payers' 2026 Workforce Reductions

In its running 2026 payer layoffs tracker, Becker's Payer Issues compiles workforce reduction announcements across 18 insurers, citing financial pressures, rising medical and pharmacy utilization, Medicaid funding cuts and strategic restructuring as drivers. Several cuts tie directly to Medicaid: Elevance Health laid off 85 employees in Washington, D.C. as it exits the district's Medicaid managed care program and will lay off 216 employees in Louisiana by year-end as it winds down its Medicaid business there; L.A. Care Health Plan laid off 225 employees in March amid restructuring driven by Medi-Cal budget reductions; Molina Healthcare laid off 156 employees in April and cut 268 last year after losing a Virginia contract; and Aetna laid off 72 remote employees after not being selected for a new Ohio dual-eligible contract. Other insurers listed, including Cigna, Centene, Point32Health, PacificSource and Optum, cut staff for reasons including market exits, voluntary separation offers and broader restructuring. The page states it is not exhaustive and will continue to be updated through the year.

Why it mattersState Medicaid agencies and providers in Washington, D.C., Louisiana, Virginia and Ohio may want to watch for network or operational disruptions at Elevance Health, Molina and Aetna as those plans exit or lose specific Medicaid and dual-eligible contracts in those markets.
