Alaska Governor Candidates Spar Over Medicaid Delays, Family Costs
At an Alaska Children's Trust forum on Oct. 26, three of four gubernatorial candidates (Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and Republicans Dave Bronson and Treg Taylor) addressed outmigration, affordability, and failures in state public assistance programs including Medicaid and SNAP. Nearly 60,000 Alaskans, including over 20,000 children, have lost Medicaid coverage since January 2025, with some losses attributed to paperwork issues rather than actual ineligibility. Alaska also has the nation's highest SNAP error rate for four consecutive years, with some residents facing months-long delays. Candidates diverged on broader affordability fixes, housing and energy costs, but the forum specifically probed how each would address administrative breakdowns in Medicaid and SNAP eligibility processing ahead of new federal eligibility requirements taking effect in January.
