Democrat Fogle Wins Missouri Senate Seat, Breaks GOP Supermajority
Democratic state Rep. Betsy Fogle defeated Republican Melanie Stinnett for a Springfield-based Missouri Senate seat that Republicans had held for more than 80 years. Combined with Keri Ingle's win in Jackson County, the results break the GOP supermajority in the Missouri Senate. Fogle, who chairs budget work on the House Budget Committee, previously helped restore $80.7 million in proposed cuts to Medicaid home- and community-based services for people with disabilities, and has warned that declining state revenue could threaten Medicaid and education funding in coming sessions. She succeeds term-limited Republican Sen. Lincoln Hough in the 30th District.
Why it mattersThe shift weakens the Senate GOP's ability to pass budget cuts or restrictive ballot measures unilaterally, giving Medicaid advocates more leverage over home- and community-based services funding in upcoming state budget fights.
