CMS Adds Amazon, Google, Meta to Prior Authorization Pledge
CMS announced that Amazon, Axon Enterprise, Google, Meta and Oracle have signed on in support of its prior authorization pledge, originally announced last year with major health plans. The pledge commits participants to streamlining prior authorization processes and increasing transparency for patients and providers by 2027. Separately, the AHA has launched a new website compiling prior authorization news and resources, which it says will be updated as additional guidance becomes available. No new regulatory requirements accompany this announcement; participation remains voluntary.
Why it mattersHealth plans, including Medicaid MCOs that joined the original pledge, face growing public and technology-sector pressure to deliver on voluntary prior authorization reforms ahead of the 2027 target.
