Tuberville Claims Alabama Governor Win; Jones Won't Concede

Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville declared victory in Alabama's governor race Tuesday night, but Democrat Doug Jones did not concede, citing uncounted votes in Jefferson County, in what appeared to be the closest Alabama gubernatorial contest in 24 years. Unofficial returns showed Tuberville leading 52.5% to 47.5% with 80% counted, and the Associated Press had not called the race. Jones campaigned on expanding Medicaid, affordability measures including a grocery tax cut, and a moratorium on new data center construction, while Tuberville ran on tax cuts, shrinking state government, and expanding the state's school voucher program. The outcome will determine Alabama's governor for the next term and, given Jones's Medicaid expansion platform, could shape whether the state revisits its non-expansion status.

Why it mattersAlabama remains one of the few states that has not expanded Medicaid, and the governor's race outcome determines whether expansion advocacy gains any traction in state government over the next term.
