Essentia Health Reports Margin Drop Ahead of HealthPartners Merger

Essentia Health reported a 1.2% operating margin for fiscal 2026, down from 2.2% the prior year, as operating expenses grew faster than revenue. Operating income fell 41% to $42.3 million despite a 6.4% rise in operating revenue to $3.49 billion, with supply expenses up 11.4%. Net income rose to $324 million, boosted by investment gains. The results come as Essentia prepares to merge with HealthPartners, which posted an operating loss amid rising medical and pharmacy costs; the combined 22-hospital nonprofit system is expected to launch January 1, pending regulatory approval.

Why it mattersWeakening margins at both merging systems signal financial pressure that could affect provider network stability and contracting leverage for Medicaid managed care plans in Minnesota.
