Colorado Rare Disease Families Face Research Hope, Medicaid Cuts

At a Colorado Rare Disease Fair held October 13 at Children's Hospital Colorado, patients, families, and advocates described both scientific progress and growing anxiety over Medicaid funding. Genetic counselors and parents shared stories of diagnostic breakthroughs, including genome sequencing that identified ultra-rare conditions like PURA Syndrome and TBCK Syndrome, now enabling earlier newborn screening and better clinical care. Advocates also flagged uncertain federal research grant funding as a threat to biotech startups developing rare disease treatments. Families separately voiced fear over looming cuts to Colorado's Medicaid budget, which many rare disease patients rely on for ongoing care and treatment access.

Why it mattersState Medicaid officials and advocates should note that pending budget cuts could directly reduce coverage and care access for the roughly 600,000 Coloradans living with rare diseases, many of whom depend on Medicaid for lifelong, high-cost care.
