Commonwealth Fund Survey Finds Uninsured Rate Jumped in 2026

A biennial Commonwealth Fund survey finds the uninsured rate among working-age Americans rose to 11.2% in 2026, up from 8.9% in 2024. Medicaid enrollment among working-age adults fell from 15.5% in 2022 to 13% this year, while the uninsured rate among adults 19 to 34 climbed from 11% to 16%. Conducted from May through July, the survey also found 46% of working-age adults were inadequately insured, with 12% experiencing a coverage gap and 23% underinsured despite having coverage. Half of respondents reported delaying or avoiding care due to cost, up from 46% in 2022, and 23% of insured adults cited high out-of-pocket costs relative to income.

Why it mattersRising uninsurance and Medicaid enrollment declines signal growing coverage churn and unmet care needs that state agencies and health plans will need to address through outreach, redetermination support, and benefit design.
