Henry Ford Health Expands Same-Day Primary Care to Behavioral Health Model

Henry Ford Health's Same-Day Solutions program, piloted in July 2025, connects primary care patients flagged for mental health concerns with a licensed behavioral health clinician the same day via a single-button referral system. The program has grown from 14 to 24 primary care clinics in its first year, with a 25th launching by the end of October. Reported results include a greater than 50% increase in completed behavioral health appointments at pilot sites, a 22% rise in referrals alongside an 85% drop in scheduling backlogs, and a 76% reduction in referrals to ill-fitting specialty services. Close to half of screened patients are managed within primary care through an embedded collaborative care model rather than being referred out.

Why it mattersHealth systems and Medicaid managed care plans facing behavioral health access shortages and costly ER utilization can look to this model as a scalable template for reducing wait times and improving referral-to-treatment conversion.
