Epic Retains AI Transparency Tools After HHS Rule Rollback

Epic announced via an Oct. 30 LinkedIn post that it will keep providing health system customers with AI transparency documentation and evaluation tools, even though HHS no longer requires them. The commitment follows an Oct. 26 final rule, HTI-5, in which HHS eliminated 14 federal health IT certification criteria and revised seven others, including AI model-card requirements established under the prior HTI-1 rule. HHS says the changes cut administrative burden and will generate $1.55 billion in present-value regulatory savings. Epic did not specify whether it will maintain every element of the former federal disclosure requirements, but said customers will retain access to existing tools for assessing the fairness and validity of its software.

Why it mattersHealth systems, including Medicaid managed care providers using Epic's decision-support tools, retain voluntary vendor transparency even as federal AI oversight requirements shrink, shifting accountability from regulation to vendor discretion.
