Insight Health System Advances Plan to Reopen Keokuk Hospital

Insight Health System, based in Flint, Michigan, is moving forward with plans to reopen the closed Keokuk Area Hospital in Iowa as a rural emergency hospital, according to a Nov. 5 news release shared with Becker's. The project would draw on $825,000 in federal funding through the Department of Agriculture's Rural Healthcare Facilities program, though grant funds have not yet been spent. Insight, which acquired the hospital in March 2023 after it closed in September 2022, has spent about $3.7 million maintaining the facility. The company expects to submit plans to the state of Iowa for review in 2027, after which a public bidding process for construction would begin, focused on essential building and life-safety improvements for emergency and outpatient services.

Why it mattersRural Iowa Medicaid beneficiaries and providers could gain restored local access to emergency and outpatient services once the facility reopens, following a years-long closure.
