Coons, Katz Spar Over ACA, Medicaid Cuts in Delaware Debate
Democratic Sen. Chris Coons and Republican challenger Dr. Mike Katz clashed over health care policy during a Wilmington candidate forum held as early voting began in Delaware's U.S. Senate race. Katz called the Affordable Care Act a "failed policy" needing a "clean slate" overhaul, while acknowledging it contains worthwhile protections like coverage for pre-existing conditions. Coons defended the ACA and blamed rising uninsured rates on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025, warning it will cut millions of people from Medicaid starting in January. The candidates also split on Social Security reform ahead of the Nov. 3 election, which will decide Delaware's Senate seat for the next six years.
Why it mattersState Medicaid stakeholders should track the race since the winner will help shape federal response to looming Medicaid coverage losses tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's expiring subsidies.
