Alabama Republicans Sweep Statewide Races Despite Narrower Margins
Alabama Republicans won the statewide offices up for election Tuesday, including Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, State Auditor and Secretary of State, though by smaller margins than in 2022. Republican John Wahl defeated Democrat Phillip Ensler for Lieutenant Governor, with Ensler campaigning in part on Medicaid expansion, a minimum wage increase, a state lottery and eliminating the grocery tax. Incumbent Republicans Young Boozer and Andrew Sorrell won new terms as Treasurer and Auditor respectively, and Caroleene Dobson won Secretary of State. Results are unofficial per the Alabama Secretary of State's office.
Why it mattersMedicaid expansion advocates gained no statewide executive ally in Alabama, leaving the state's non-expansion status and related coverage gap unchanged for the near term.
