CMS, States Launch $275M Nursing Home Nurse Recruitment Program

CMS and states have launched the Nurses for Nursing Homes initiative, a $275 million program offering student nurses and licensed nurses up to $40,000 in student loan repayment or a $10,000 stipend. Recipients must commit to three years of service at a qualifying nursing home, likely in rural or high-shortage areas, working at least 30 hours per week. The program is funded through civil monetary penalties collected from nursing homes rather than taxpayer funds, with CMS contributing $100 million and states committing at least $175 million. CMS expects the initiative to support more than 4,000 nurses nationwide; eligibility requires an active RN or LPN/LVN license and, for the stipend, recent graduation or qualifying student loan debt.

Why it mattersNursing homes facing chronic staffing shortages, particularly in rural and underserved areas, gain a new federally backed recruitment tool that could ease workforce pressures tied to staffing mandates and quality-of-care compliance.
