UnitedHealth Posts $4.1B Q3 Profit, Adds AI Plan Picker Tool
UnitedHealth Group reported $4.1 billion in third-quarter 2026 profit, up 75% year over year, and raised its full-year earnings outlook to at least $19.50 per share, according to an Oct. 13 release. Revenue was $112.7 billion, down slightly, while the medical cost ratio improved to 88.4% from 89.9% a year earlier. Medicaid membership stood at 6.7 million, part of an overall medical membership decline to 48.3 million from 50.1 million a year ago. CEO Stephen Hemsley also announced AI-powered plan recommendations, based on member care history and local options, for the upcoming Medicare Advantage enrollment period.
Why it mattersShrinking Medicaid and overall membership alongside improving margins signals UnitedHealth is prioritizing cost discipline and risk selection over enrollment growth, a trend other state Medicaid agencies and competing plans will need to watch in rate negotiations.
