UHS Q3 Margin Falls as Debt, Interest Costs Climb

Universal Health Services reported third-quarter 2026 operating income of $454 million, a 9.6% margin, down from 11.6% a year earlier, as rising long-term debt and a 46% jump in interest expense weighed on results. Revenue grew to $4.7 billion but was outpaced by higher expenses, while the company absorbed a $26 million liability reserve tied to a tentative settlement involving Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents. UHS reported a $47 million favorable pre-tax impact from increased Medicaid supplemental payment programs, primarily in Washington, D.C. and California. The company also flagged that new federal Medicaid work requirements and provider fee limits, enacted in July 2025, are expected to reduce future revenue and increase uncompensated care as they phase in over coming years.
