Kaiser Permanente Gives $15M for Oakland Pediatric Psychiatric Unit
Kaiser Permanente donated $15 million to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland to build a new behavioral health wing featuring the hospital's first dedicated inpatient psychiatric rooms. The 21,300-square-foot wing will include 20 private psychiatric rooms, an outdoor therapy space and a therapeutic roof garden, and is expected to serve roughly 700 children and adolescents annually. The project is part of a broader hospital modernization effort and is slated to open in 2031. The gift follows a $25 million Kaiser Permanente donation in August to expand emergency department capacity at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in Los Angeles.
Why it mattersThe donation expands scarce inpatient pediatric psychiatric capacity in the Bay Area, a resource shortage that directly affects access for children covered by Medicaid managed care plans.
