ACOG Issues Guidance on GLP-1 Use During Breastfeeding
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published an advisory on Oct. 23 addressing GLP-1 medication use while breastfeeding. The guidance says patients who paused GLP-1s during pregnancy may be able to resume them postpartum while nursing, with OB-GYNs and other clinicians working with patients to decide whether to include the drugs in a postpartum care plan; infant weight gain should be monitored if the drugs are used. ACOG recommends against GLP-1 use while nursing preterm infants or neonates and continues to advise against use during pregnancy due to limited safety data, recommending patients stop the drugs one to two months before conception. The organization also advises against oral GLP-1 formulations during breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data on absorption-enhancing modifications.
