FSMB Workgroup With AHA, Anthropic Eyes AI Oversight Rules

The Federation of State Medical Boards confirmed to Becker's that a national workgroup including the American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, Anthropic and Elevance Health is developing recommendations for how state medical boards should oversee AI used in clinical practice. FSMB announced the workgroup in May, focusing particularly on AI systems that perform clinical functions, such as diagnosis or prescribing, with limited or no direct physician supervision. The group met in Washington in early October, and draft recommendations are expected in the coming weeks or months. The guidance would build on FSMB's 2024 AI policy guidance and could inform state medical board policy and broader state-level regulation as states also develop regulatory sandbox frameworks for clinical AI.

Why it mattersHealth plans and providers using or contracting for AI-driven clinical decision tools should track this workgroup closely, since its recommendations could shape new state licensure and supervision requirements affecting how autonomous AI can be deployed in patient care, including care delivered to Medicaid beneficiaries.
