Virginia Launches Coalition to Limit Medicaid Coverage Losses
Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Marvin Figueroa announced the Virginia United Coalition, a partnership of health plans, hospitals, free clinics, and workforce and faith organizations aimed at helping residents retain Medicaid coverage amid new federal eligibility and work requirements under H.R. 1. About 300,000 Virginians are at risk of losing Medicaid coverage starting next year due to added verification mandates, and more than 5,000 lawful immigrants already lost eligibility this month. Coalition members include UnitedHealthcare, which will send outreach messages to members, the Virginia Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, which is funding targeted ads, the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, which will review state notices and forms for administrative burden, and Goodwill Industries, which is building referral pathways for the new work requirements. The state is also investing $150 million in subsidies for residents who lost ACA marketplace coverage, starting next month.
