Democrat Stelson Unseats Medicaid-Cuts Ally Perry in Pennsylvania
Democrat Janelle Stelson defeated seven-term Republican Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District, a rematch of their 2024 race which Stelson narrowly lost. Perry, former House Freedom Caucus chair and a staunch Trump ally, had backed the administration's sweeping Medicaid cuts and other controversial policies. The race, covering Harrisburg and York, drew over $16 million in campaign spending and national attention as a potential factor in control of Congress. Stelson, who campaigned as a moderate on cost-of-living and abortion access, will be sworn in January 3, 2027.
Why it mattersThe defeat of a vocal supporter of federal Medicaid cuts shifts the congressional makeup that will shape future Medicaid financing and eligibility legislation.
