Haaland Names Medicaid Eligibility Changes a 2027 Session Priority

New Mexico Governor-elect Deb Haaland, speaking the morning after her election win, said she plans to use the 2027 legislative session to address changing Medicaid eligibility requirements set to take effect in January that could remove coverage from nearly 90,000 New Mexicans. Haaland, who defeated Republican Gregg Hull to become the first Native American woman elected governor in U.S. history, launched a transition website to recruit administration staff and said she has not yet made cabinet decisions. She said she is willing to work with the Trump administration to ensure it meets funding obligations to New Mexico, and would consult the state attorney general if those conversations fail. On the campaign trail she had pledged to combat federal cuts to social services and work toward a statewide public option for healthcare.

Why it mattersNew Mexico Medicaid beneficiaries, providers and managed care plans may need to watch the 2027 legislative session closely as Haaland's administration weighs state-level responses to federal eligibility changes that could strip coverage from nearly 90,000 residents.
