Atrium Health to Build 168-Bed Behavioral Hospital in Charlotte

Atrium Health announced a $340 million, five-year investment in mental health care, anchored by a new 168-bed behavioral health hospital in north Charlotte's University City area, set to open in 2028. The facility, converted from an unused office building, will include 48 beds for children and teens, a mental health emergency department, outpatient services and intensive non-overnight treatment programs. It will replace Atrium's aging 66-bed Randolph Road facility, for a net gain of 102 beds, and will accept Medicaid, uninsured and involuntarily committed patients. Atrium will also spend about $140 million on community-based services, including school-based therapy and street psychiatry programs, to address North Carolina's psychiatric bed shortage and behavioral health workforce gaps.

Why it mattersThe expanded, Medicaid-accepting inpatient capacity could ease emergency department boarding of psychiatric patients and give North Carolina Medicaid managed care plans a new in-network option for behavioral health admissions once it opens in 2028.
