Duke Endowment Grants $100M to NC Children's Health System
The Duke Endowment has awarded a $100 million grant to North Carolina Children's to support development of a freestanding pediatric health system, the largest philanthropic gift the organization has received to date. The grant follows a $424.5 million investment from the North Carolina General Assembly. NC Children's, formed in 2025 by Duke Health and UNC Health, plans to build a pediatric campus in Apex, North Carolina, featuring a roughly 500-bed acute-care children's hospital, a 70-bed pediatric behavioral health hospital, an ambulatory surgery center, and research and education facilities. Groundbreaking is planned for 2027, with opening expected in the early 2030s, at which point pediatric programs from Duke Children's and UNC Children's will relocate to the new campus.
