Iowa Fines Chiropractor $1,000 Over Billing Settlement Disclosure

The Iowa Board of Chiropractic has fined Taylor Vanden Wynboom $1,000 after he failed to timely disclose a civil settlement with the federal government over billing practices at his former Ankeny practice, Nova Integrated Health. The board alleges Wynboom entered a June 2024 settlement, paying $52,000 with no admission of liability, but did not notify the board within the required 30 days as mandated, and separately cited him for unethical conduct. Under the resolution, Wynboom must pay the penalty and complete 30 hours of training on ethics and proper billing and coding. The underlying billing dispute traces to a device called Sanexas and allegations that a billing consultant, the National Billing Institute, helped providers upcode and bill for services not rendered to Medicare and other insurers.

Why it mattersThe case underscores that state licensing boards can independently discipline providers for failing to self-report federal billing settlements, creating a compliance exposure separate from any federal civil liability.
