Colorado Senate Candidates Spar Over Medicaid Cuts in Debate

Colorado U.S. Senate candidates John Hickenlooper, the Democratic incumbent, and Republican state Sen. Mark Baisley clashed over Medicaid during a debate Wednesday hosted by 9News. Baisley defended federal Republican cuts and new eligibility requirements, projected to cause an estimated 377,000 Coloradans to lose coverage, and said he wants a smaller government role in healthcare generally. Hickenlooper attacked the cuts as part of what he called a "One Big Bad Betrayal Act" dismantling the healthcare system, though he stopped short of endorsing a single-payer system and instead touted bipartisan price transparency legislation. The election will determine Colorado's next senator but does not itself change Medicaid policy.

Why it mattersColorado Medicaid agencies, MCOs, and providers should track this race given the candidates' sharply divergent positions on federal Medicaid eligibility and funding policy that could shape coverage for hundreds of thousands of enrollees.
