Availity Opens Payer Data APIs to Power Billing AI Agents

At Becker's 11th Annual IT + Revenue Cycle Conference, Availity executives and billing company MSN Healthcare Solutions described how exposing payer connectivity as APIs enabled AI agents to automate claims work. Availity built a new platform, Availity Extend, pairing developer documentation and a sandbox with a Model Context Protocol layer so companies can build their own agents against payer data. MSN, which processes about 4 million claims monthly, used the new API access to build in-house agents that check hundreds of claim statuses at once, cutting roughly half the manual workload from its team. Panelists emphasized that direct, documented API access, not just technology, was the missing piece, and that human review remains necessary even as automation scales.

Why it mattersHealth plans and billing vendors gain a template for using payer API connectivity to automate claims status and eligibility checks at scale, directly reducing administrative costs tied to claims adjudication and accounts receivable delays.
