Ballad Health Ties Nursing Turnover Drop to Medicaid Payment Gains
Ballad Health CEO Alan Levine told Becker's that the Tennessee-based system cut nursing turnover from nearly 30% to below 12% through higher nursing pay, a homegrown talent academy, childcare centers and an employee affinity program. The system posted a 4% operating margin in fiscal 2026 and is sustaining similar margins in fiscal 2027, which Levine attributed to expense management, staffing investments and revenue enhancements rather than volume growth. Among those revenue enhancements, Levine cited renegotiated insurer contracts and working with the state to put state-directed payments in place in its Medicaid program. The system also invested in a clinical command center and AI-enabled stroke care technology to ease staff workload and improve rural access.
