Charleston Free Clinic Serves 400 Amid Looming WV Work Requirements

West Virginia Health Right, a free and charitable clinic in Charleston, hosted its annual #WeCareWV Day on October 1, providing free medical, dental and vision care to more than 400 people with no income restrictions. State Sen. Tom Takubo, a physician who volunteers at the event, said need for such charity care will grow once new Medicaid work requirements under the federal One Big Beautiful Act take effect in January. A state Department of Human Services analysis estimated roughly 33,000 West Virginia residents will be affected by the new requirements, and patients interviewed described fears about losing coverage due to paperwork burdens, disability determination delays, and income thresholds that leave them "too much and not enough" to qualify for either Medicaid or private insurance.

Why it mattersState Medicaid agencies and legislators should anticipate increased reliance on charity and safety-net providers as new federal work requirements threaten coverage for tens of thousands of enrollees starting in January.
