Wisconsin Governor-Elect Crowley Declines to Commit on Medicaid Expansion
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who will become Wisconsin's governor in January after defeating Republican Tom Tiffany, held his first press event as governor-elect and pledged to lower costs and expand access to affordable health care and child care. Asked directly whether he wants immediate legislation to expand Medicaid or create a BadgerCare for all option, Crowley deferred, saying he would leave specific bills to legislative leaders and is focused on transition planning. Democrats now control both the Assembly and Senate alongside the governor's office. Crowley takes office in January.
Why it mattersWisconsin's Medicaid agency and advocates for expansion will want to watch whether Crowley and the newly Democratic-controlled Legislature move to expand Medicaid, since Wisconsin remains one of the states that has not adopted full expansion.
