Conduent Agrees to $80M Settlement Over Massive Data Breach

Conduent, a business services provider to payers and other healthcare clients, signed an $80 million class action settlement on October 16 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, according to an SEC filing. The settlement resolves litigation over a breach that exposed data on roughly 62.2 million people, including names, addresses, birth dates, medical and health insurance information, and Social Security numbers. An unauthorized third party accessed Conduent's network between October 2024 and January 2025, with the SafePay ransomware group claiming it stole 8.5 terabytes of data. The nonreversionary fund covers claims, credit and medical monitoring, attorney fees, and administrative costs; it still requires court approval, and Conduent denies fault while citing cyber insurance coverage.

Why it mattersHealth plans and Medicaid agencies that rely on Conduent for front- and back-office functions face exposure to downstream member notification, liability, and vendor oversight obligations stemming from one of the largest healthcare data breaches on record.
