Humana, Athenahealth Expand Electronic Prior Authorization Access
Humana and Athenahealth are expanding electronic prior authorization capabilities across Athenahealth's network of more than 180,000 clinicians, using the AthenaPayer tool to connect with providers in the AthenaOne network. A Nov. 3 news release reports that more than 6,000 providers submitted nearly 35,000 electronic prior authorization transactions with Humana in September, with over 70% completed without practice staff supplying additional information. The companies have previously partnered with Availity on prior authorization efforts. The expansion precedes the 2027 API provisions of CMS's 2024 Interoperability and Prior Authorization Rule, and follows CMS naming Athenahealth an early adopter in a related electronic prior authorization initiative.
