Pennsylvania Joins Physician Assistant Licensure Compact
Gov. Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 1961, now Act 76, on Oct. 22, making Pennsylvania the 30th state to join the PA Licensure Compact, according to an Oct. 26 American Academy of Physician Associates release. The compact will let eligible physician assistants, nearly 13,000 of whom practice in Pennsylvania, work across member states without obtaining separate licenses in each. Joining the compact was part of the state's Rural Health Transformation Program application, and the compact commission expects privileges to be operational by early to mid-2027. Neighboring states Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey are already members, expanding a regional cross-licensure network.
Why it mattersExpanded PA licensure portability could ease workforce shortages for Medicaid providers in rural and underserved Pennsylvania communities once the compact becomes operational in 2027.
